Sclerotherapy
The term sclerosis is derived from the Greek root Sklerosis, which defines the hardening of a structure as a result of excess fibrous tissue growth or scarring.
Sclerotherapy of varicose and / or telangiectasia (spider veins), refers to treatment by injection of substances in the light of these vessels, which result in endothelial damage (inner layer of a glass) and consequent fibrosis and disappearance of these veins.
The objective of sclerotherapy independently if it is perform in telangiectases or large caliber veins, is the removal of the glass.
Ideally, fibrosis induced by injection of sclerosant, in its different forms should occur with non or minimal venous thrombosis (formation of local clot in a vein). However if this occurs you may present a reaction of stained and / or inflammation of the skin.
If the results of sclerotherapy are successful in the vessel fibrosis, there is no possibility of recanalization. (Vena non-functional).
It is a minimally invasive ambulatory procedure, which requires no rest, it is not a surgical treatment and local anesthesia is used.
Because the superficial veins are the ones that are going to be treated, the flow and proper circulation of blood in your body is ensured by the deep veins, that normally carry 90% of the venous blood of the legs and if it´s necessary could lead to 100%. During the treatment, which could last several sessions, you can perform normal activities, exercise, walk and work, you should not exposed your legs to the sun and a type of elastic support (bandages or stockings), which are usually recommended by your doctor, must be used.
